Was ist Phase?

The "What is Phase?" project seeks an answer to the question of how the Bockenheim campus in Frankfurt can be reused for the common good. For over 20 years, the fate of the campus has been debated between the state, the city and the citizens. For around 100 years, it served as the main campus of the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University Frankfurt. Since the opening of the new Westend campus in 2001, the university has been gradually moving out of its premises.  The result: approx. 28,600m² of vacant space - unused, threatened by demolition plans and accompanied by stagnating planning processes.

The area sits as a pivotal point between the Westend and Bockenheim districts. The porosity of the cluster means that the campus is embedded in the urban fabric. The area designed by Ferdinand Kramer has long been long been more than just a monofunctional campus. Rather, it is now a social meeting place in the city. It is precisely this quality that citizens' initiatives and associations want to preserve and have been actively resisting the demolition of the existing buildings, the privatisation of land and the construction of luxury flats and hotels on the site for 20 years. The overall strategy aims to restore the accessibility of the public space by strengthening the existing qualities and potential of the area and to secure it in the long term.  This is accompanied by questions regarding the preservation and reactivation of a common ground - a place of community creation. The design describes conditions, situations and relationships between actors that create a shared space and frame the process of confrontation and cooperation. The level of consideration includes the reactivation of the outdoor space, the ground floor and the upper floors of vacant buildings. The aim is to minimise the need for spatial interventions by reinterpreting and reactivating the utility value of existing spaces.

The design envisages a development with multiple owners and users with different frequencies and durations of use. The upgrading measures have been developed for all four interventions on a building-specific basis, whereby there is a correlation between the existing building, the programme and the spatial qualities to be developed. Squares and courtyards act as mediators between the buildings at the interfaces to the ground floor zone, creating space for the formation of synergies between the actors in the interior and exterior spaces. This will result in four interventions with different spatial, programmatic and temporal dimensions that can be developed independently of each other, so that the reactivation of the vacant space could begin immediately In addition, there are several forms of densification on the campus. These consist of making better and more intensive use of the existing buildings. Densification helps us to look at our living environment in terms of quality rather than quantity, shifting the focus from square metres to the intelligence and functionality of the space. In this way, the design considers not only a programmatic density but also a temporal density. The spatial location and the programme should enable the actors to develop synergies.  The temporal density enables the campus to become a place that is alive 24/7. The university, the students, the residents of the Juridicum and the associations share several spaces, creating overlapping points and places of encounter.
