Circus Omnibus
The transformation of large sporting complexes into public spaces or integral components of the urban fabric has been a recurring theme in the development of Western cities. From ancient arenas to modern stadiums, these structures have continuously influenced the spatial, cultural, and social evolution of urban life.

This also highlights the significance of scale in sports infrastructures within cities. Their vast dimensions often serve as a familiar reference for measuring space — for instance, Italians often remark that Vatican City is roughly the size of sixty football fields. Such comparisons reveal how deeply these monumental structures are embedded in our collective understanding of spatial proportion and urban identity.

Our project site lies in Geneva’s Jonction neighborhood, an area named after the confluence of the Rhône and Arve rivers. When Geneva hosted the National Exhibition in 1896, one of the new building typologies introduced for the event was a velodrome, located in the Jonction. However, as the city’s industrial sector expanded, the demand for workers’ housing grew urgent. Consequently, the velodrome was demolished in 1917, lasting only twenty-one years.  During this period, a new typology appeared in the area: public transport infrastructure. In 1906, a tram depot was built on this very site, and remarkably, it still exists today. Next year, it will celebrate its 120th anniversary, marking over a century of continuous operation.

With the Jonction now set to be transformed into a large public park, we identified the opportunity to reintroduce the velodrome as a contemporary public sporting infrastructure. The proposal envisions grafting it into the existing, still-functioning bus depot structure — preserving its operations while activating the riverfront through a new public tribune, constructed from reused steel trusses sourced from the bus depot that is soon to be dismantled.
