Barcelona's vernacular but also modern architecture is a pioneer in the combination of robust low-tech architecture and passive design strategies for the Mediterranean climate zone. This interplay will become increasingly important in other parts of Europe due to climate change. The Living Metamorphosis is a changeable house that is able to adapt to seasonal climatic conditions. The acute-angled corner house is located at the meeting point of the three neighbourhoods of El Raval, Sant Antoni and El Poble Sec. The building offers 48 flats spread over six floors. 

The living concept is based on open plan living spaces that connect the urban space with a climate-regulating patio. The kitchen area is adjacent to a small entrance area that facilitates interaction with the building community in the triangular courtyard. All flats are arranged around the patio and benefit from its chimney effect. The Living Metamorphosis  behaves differently in summer than in winter, which is already visible from the outside. Residents control its natural processes: on hot days, it opens up to the city and spreads out its blinds. This protects its thick outer skin from the sun. Rooms can draw on the night-time cold in their components until the afternoon. If it gets too warm, the Living Metamorphosis releases the warm, stale air from its interior upwards through its patio into the open air (chimney effect). In winter, it falls into a “rigid hibernation” and closes all its openings. Its ceilings and façade skin store the solar heat to provide reserves for its rooms at night.
