under the bridge  - a façade for the A23 motorwayThe urban space around the south-east tangent is characterised by large scales, long distances and rapid movement. As a human being, the place is difficult to grasp and utilise. Typical of infrastructural spaces in the city, this place also lacks an architectural design and a human scale. In contrast, Otto Wagner's belt line is finely designed, from the large-scale structure to the detail. Under the elevated railway are spaces that are accompanied by footpaths on either side. This urban spatial principle is adapted to the design area of the A23 motorway.

The busy motorway is clad with a façade and new interior spaces are created under the road. The façade takes up the surrounding urban spaces and reacts to the neighbourhoods growing up on both sides. Different sections in the façade create different types of spaces under and next to the tangent. These allow for existing as well as new, more public uses and react sensitively to the respective, very specific context. The supports of the tangent define the spatial units and the protruding carriageway provides protection for the accompanying footpath and cycle path. The noise barrier becomes part of the continuous façade and connects the street level with the ground floor layer.
