The German word Zeilenbau defines a type of terraced housing consisting of apartment buildings rather than single-family homes. First appearing at the beginning of the 20th century, this typology became particularly popular in Germany after the Second World War. The parallel rows of apartment buildings with large green spaces in between shape almost every German city and define its urban structure. Due to its repetitive nature and lack of variation and density, this typology is not particularly popular. Therefore, it is no surprise that, after 70 years of use, it is starting to fall victim to demolition.


How can Zeilenbau dwellings from the 1950s and 1960s be transformed to meet today’s housing needs while ensuring the long-term resilience of this typology?

Looking at a specific example in Hamburg, the project explores the potential for adaptation of Zeilenbau housing to contemporary living conditions and housing requirements. Particular focus is given to the question of how the existing properties can be upgraded while also identifying new potential, thus avoiding the demolition of the existing building fabric. The existing qualities of the Zeile housing are to be preserved and enhanced, while architectural solutions are to be developed for identified weaknesses. This includes developing complementary housing concepts, creating distinct outdoor spaces, and fostering social and functional development in the neighborhood. 

The project develops a strategy that demonstrates how Zeilenbau housing can be sustainably transformed. This work not only highlights the specific challenges of one existing neighborhood but also outlines sustainable approaches to the high-quality social and ecological further development of this typology, some of which can be transferred to other contexts.
